Payton: Hi this is Math Shorts with patterns hosting Payton
Allison: Allison
Veronica: and Veronic
Veronica: do you know what a pattern is Allison?
Allison: yes I do, a pattern is a series of numbers that are increasing or decreasing
Payton: what is increasing and decreasing mean?
Allison: increasing is a number going up, decreasing is a number going down.
Veronica: hey Allison how about we show Payton a example problem
Allison: ok lets start out easy, here is the pattern 2,4,6,8,10 what is the next number in the problem.
Veronica: first you must find out if the number is increasing or decreasing.
Payton: I know, its increasing because it’s the number is going up
Veronica: that’s correct, now we must see if it is multiplying or adding
Payton: oh that’s easy its adding by two, I know the next number is 12
Allison: Great job!
Veronica: Fractions have a special rule if you multiply the fraction goes down.
Payton: Come on, that other problem was easy, give me a more complicated problem
Allison: ok, The numbers are shown below follow a pattern.
3,9,27,81
Which rule could be used to find the next number in this pattern?

Veronica: first is it increasing or decreasin
Payton: increasing
Allison: is it multiplying or adding
Payton: ummm, multiplying by 3
Veronica: that’s correct
Payton: so the next number would be 243
Allison: Correct!
Payton: you can use patterns to help you predict what’s going to happen next
Veronica: like to help find out how many times it will rain a month
Allison: well I hope you learned a lot
Payton: you are now an expert on patterns.
Everyone: see ya!
